Introduction to FinOps

The Three Phases of the FinOps Lifecycle

According to the FinOps Foundation, the FinOps journey is iterative and consists of three phases:

• Inform: Providing visibility and allocation. This involves tagging resources, implementing showback or chargeback models, and establishing budgets and forecasts.
• Optimize: Empowering teams to reduce waste. This includes rightsizing instances, finding unused resources, and leveraging purchasing options like Reserved Instances (RIs) and Savings Plans.
• Operate: Defining and executing processes. Creating a FinOps Center of Excellence, setting up automation, and continually evaluating business alignment and metrics.
